A 2000-word project consisting of five questions (±10%).
Due: Sunday of Week 11
Throughout the trimester, we discuss several serious social issues (e.g., family
violence, inequality, poverty, mental health, addiction) and also examine various
sociological perspectives (theories) that allow us to view these issues from
different angles, taking into account their underlying causes. In this project,
students will have an opportunity to begin analysing potential solutions to social
issues. The assignment is designed to improve students’ ability to apply unit
concepts and theories to real-world situations and develop their analytical skills in
community service.
To complete this project, students should answer five (5) questions:
- Questions 1-3 are the same as those you answered in Assessment 2
(Video Presentation), with some minor changes. You are expected to
incorporate the feedback you received for Assessment 2 to improve your
responses, and this time present them in written form. Please note that
some questions have been modified, so make sure to address any new
components. - Question 4 (Analysis of a Local Organisation) requires you to analyse a
real, local organisation that supports people with needs similar to those
of the vulnerable group you identified in Question 3. - Question 5 (Analysis of Government Response) asks you to evaluate how
the Australian government addresses the issues affecting this vulnerable
population, and to provide your own reflection on what more could be
done.
This is an academic writing assessment, so your responses must be written in full
sentences and structured paragraphs (not in bullet points as used in your
presentation). You may include diagrams or tables, but they must be clearly
described and integrated into your written explanation.
In this assignment, you must draw on both required and recommended readings,
as well as at least three (3) additional academic sources (peer-reviewed journal
articles or academic books). You may also use information from Australian
government websites, non-government or peak organisations, and other reliable
online resources.
he final project should include each of the following components:
QUESTION 1: COMPARE AND DESCRIBE THE TWO LOCALITIES (CHERBOURG AND PEPPERMINT GROVE)
(350–400 words)
How do Cherbourg and Peppermint Grove differ in terms of key social indicators, and what might these
differences suggest about variations in living conditions and opportunities?
Using the census data provided for Cherbourg (QLD) and Peppermint Grove (WA) (see ABS tables in
Assessment 2), compare the two localities across at least six (6) social and demographic indicators that
reflect the characteristics of the people living in these areas and other social attributes.
Your answer should include:
- A comparison of at least six (6) indicators from the ABS tables above, such as:
o Unemployment rate
o Median weekly incomes
o Family composition
o Tenure type - Numerical data (percentages) – create a comparison table.
- A description of the key differences between the two localities.
- A brief interpretation of what these differences suggest, based on the data, and make a clear
reference to the numerical data on your table. - At least two references, taken only from Moodle materials and ABS data provided in Assessment
2 description.
QUESTION 2: UNDERSTANDING AGENCY AND STRUCTURE (350–400 words)
How do you understand the relationship between agency and structure, and how might these concepts
help explain the differences in people’s lives in Cherbourg and Peppermint Grove?
Based on the lecture materials and required and optional readings, explain how you understand the
relationship between agency and structure. Reflect on how people’s lives in these two localities might
differ due to their individual choices and the structural factors that determine their lives (apply the
concepts of agency and structure in this analysis).
Your answer should include:
- A brief explanation of the concepts agency and structure, based on:
o Lecture materials
o Required and optional readings - At least two references, taken only from Moodle materials (required and optional readings).
- A clear explanation of the relationship between agency and structure
- A reflection on how people’s individual choices (agency) and external conditions (structure) might
differ across the two localities based on your previous Question 1 comparison of these localities.

QUESTION 3: SOCIAL GROUPS – VULNERABILITY AND ADVANTAGE (350–400 words)
Which social groups in either Cherbourg or Peppermint Grove appear most vulnerable or most
advantaged based on the data? How does this reflect their living conditions and opportunities?
People in these localities come from various social groups – ethnic, professional, age-based, etc (you can
find this information in this data). Identify which groups might be the most vulnerable (e.g., children from
families with unemployed parents) and the most advantaged group. Describe two groups and explain your
choice in one location.
Your answer should include: - A description of two social groups in one locality (either Cherbourg or Peppermint Grove), using
ABS data (see Assessment 1). - A description of one group that appears vulnerable and why – based on indicators in the data
(e.g., employment, family composition, education). - A description of one group that appears advantaged why – based on indicators in the data (e.g.,
employment, family composition, education). - An explanation of why each group is considered vulnerable or advantaged.
- Identify relevant social determinants that affect the members of this vulnerable group (e.g., low
income, lack of education, poor access to healthcare). - References to ABS data and other sources.
QUESTION 4: ANALYSIS OF A LOCAL ORGANISATION (450-500 words)
How does a local organisation in Queensland support people facing challenges similar to those in the
vulnerable group you identified in Question 3? What sociological theories help explain or support this
organisation’s work?
Your answer should include two parts:
4.1 Organisation Overview (250-300 words)
Identify one local non-government organisation in Queensland (preferable near Cherbourg) that supports
people facing social issues similar to those of the vulnerable group described in Question 3. Examining the
organisation’s website and any of its publications, such as newsletters, brochures, or interviews of the
service users or workers in the media.
Explain the purpose and goals of the organisation. What larger social issue does it address (e.g., housing
insecurity, alcohol misuse, domestic violence)?
Describe what sources of information you use and provide references.
4.2 Theoretical Application (200-250)
Discuss two theories that support the organisation’s approach to addressing the social issue (use only
theories covered in this unit).
22 | P a g e
Discuss how these theories (e.g., feminist theory, Marxist theory) relate to the goals, values, or practices
of the organisation.
Provide references from academic literature to support your explanation.
Example: (Do not use this organisation and this example of service in your project; choose others)
A feminist theory can be applied to analyse how the organisation of the Red Cross (Reference to the
organisation’s website) tries to address gender inequalities, such as the specific needs of gender
minorities or gendered vulnerable groups (Reference to the source about feminist theory). The concept
of intersectionality helps to focus on how gender intersects with other social characteristics and
identities such as asylum seeker status to analyse their influence on vulnerability and unequal
opportunities (Reference to the source about intersectionality). For example, in a refugee camp,
women face additional challenges such as sexual violence and lack of healthcare services. The Red Cross
tries to address these issues by providing women with women’s health services (Reference to the
organisation’s webpage with the information about this service).
QUESTION 5: ANALYSIS OF THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT RESPONSES (350-400 words)
How has the Australian government addressed the social issue you explored in Question 4, and what
further steps could be taken?
Your answer should include: - A discussion of specific policies, programs, or initiatives at the federal and/or state level that aim to
address the issue affecting the vulnerable group. - Use official sources, such as government websites and policy documents, to support your analysis.
- Reflect on how Australia’s constitutional structure (the division of powers between federal and state
governments) influences the design and implementation of these responses. - Suggest potential improvements to reduce the number of people facing similar challenges to those in
the vulnerable group identified in Question 3. - Support your suggestions with evidence from academic literature, government reports, and/or policy
advocacy materials
