Instructions for Assessment 2A
a. Carry out a 10-minute role play (face to face) where you are the social worker in a face-to-face interview with a client. You will do this role play in class time, in front of the whole class.
- On the day of the assessment, your educator will partner you with another student who will play the client, and you will play the social worker. You and your partner will be provided different scenarios by your educator.
- This 10-minute interview allows you to demonstrate your ability to engage and work with a client using social work theories/approaches and practice skills learnt in class.
- The interview represents the first 10 minutes of a first meeting with a client that would normally be one hour long.
- After the role play is completed, the person who plays the client will provide feedback on the Feedback Skills Sheet (available on Moodle). This feedback should be incorporated into your critical reflection.
- You will need to record your in-class role play and upload it to Moodle.
- Assessment criteria:
- a) The interview will be assessed on your demonstration of basic engagement and interviewing techniques and ability to apply social work theories/approaches into practice with warmth, empathy and cultural sensitivity. TIP: Do not give advice, do not tell the person not to worry or that everything will be all right. Attune your emotions to the client.
Your educator will assign you one of the three scenarios below:
- Rosa is 26 years old and has arrived at the community centre with her two children aged 3 and 2 after leaving her partner earlier that day due to escalating domestic violence.
She has no access to money, her phone was taken by her partner, and she does not know where she will sleep that night. Rosa is distressed and fearful that her partner may try to find her.
When Rosa reaches your service, she is in crisis. How can you safely intervene to address her most urgent needs? - Fatima is 62 years old and migrated to the country 15 years ago. She lives with her adult son and daughter-in-law. Fatima speaks limited English and relies on her family for transport, finances, and access to health services. She reports feeling isolated and says she is often left alone at home for long periods.
Fatima also mentions feeling ‘low in herself’ but says she has never spoken to a doctor about this. She has come to your service seeking support but is unsure what help she is allowed to ask for.
Rebecca is 41 years old and is the mother of Omar, aged 8. Omar’s school has contacted Rebecca due to concerns about his regular lateness, poor attendance, and arriving at school without lunch on several occasions.
Rebecca reports feeling overwhelmed and says she is struggling to manage routines at home since separating from Omar’s father. She is not currently working and has limited support from family or friends.
Rebecca has been asked by the school to engage with support services and has come to your service seeking help.
