Unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to develop critical understanding of managing operations and information systems within projects. The interrelationships within functional areas will be examined and the influence of contemporary factors. Learners will explore organisational strategy in relation to capacity to plan for products and consider the value of inventory management using information systems and inventory scheduling.

Scenario

You are the Head of Operations at one of the organisations listed below:

Amazon
British Airline
Lidl
BBC
Pret A Manger
Cisco UK

As a part of the global expansion plan, you are asked by the CEO to prepare a report that will outline major operational considerations that project managers of the organisation located at various geographic locations across the globe will need to consider.

To develop this management report, you must apply relevant theoretical concepts, models, relate them with real world examples of your chosen organisational context and critically analyse your arguments and arrive at justifiable recommendations.

Task 1 of 1 – Report Instructions

Your report should consist of three sections containing the following:

Section A – (ACs 1.1, 1.2, 1.3,1.4, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4)

Assess the similarities and differences between production and service operations.
Analyse the three major functional areas of organizations and describe how they interrelate.
Evaluate a range of theories related to operations management.
Describe the operations function and the nature of the operations manager’s job.
Evaluate current issues in business that are impacting operations management especially in your chosen organisation.
Critically assess the importance of capacity planning.
Analyse ways of defining and measuring capacity.
Evaluate the factors to consider when deciding whether to operate inhouse or outsource.
Describe the steps that are used to resolve constraint issues.

Section B – (ACs 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5)

Evaluate the nature and importance of inventories.
Analyse the requirements for effective inventory management.
Evaluate the use of the AB-C approach to inventory management.
Describe the principles of Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model and its assumptions.
Examine the single-period model and its Define what global supply chain ecosystem is.

Section C – (ACs 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.1, 5.2)

Explain what scheduling involves and the importance of good scheduling.
Compare product and service scheduling hierarchies.
Evaluate approaches used for scheduling service systems.
Explain how to overcome a range of unique problems encountered in service systems
Identify resources, tools and systems that can support a project’s quality management.
Evaluate quality assurance frameworks that can be applied to a project.
