Ardmore High School Criminal Justice Discussion Questions and Response – Description
In this discussion post, please answer the following:
1. In society, we use physical appearance to give us informational cues about people. Think of a time when you saw someone and their appearance led you to perceive them in a certain way.
For example, I have a dog park right outside of my apartment. The other day I was out with my dog in shorts and a t shirt because it was nearing 90 degrees. My neighbor brought her dog out and was wearing black dress pants. I thought to myself she either just got off work or has to work later because she probably wouldn’t willingly wear black slacks in the heat otherwise.
2. List an example of body modification you engage in or have engaged in in the past (this doesn’t have to be extreme – things like coloring your hair or wearing a certain outfit count). What motivated you to do this?
Reply to :1.Mary-One of the biggest perceptions for me in my career has been due to uniform standards in the military. I realized I perceived persons with “high and tight” cuts as being in the military, this was usually coupled with khaki pants and a polo. Another perception when stationed closed to training bases was that if they wore running sneakers in the club they were Soldiers in Training and most times that perception was not wrong. The least extreme form of body modification but more socially (at least in America) acceptable is shaving my legs. Simple right? We wouldn’t think it’s considered modification but I believe it is. Commercials show us what females with nice shaved (or waxed) legs have. Even in movies they show men who are not “attracted” to females with hairy legs. For me, the simple answer on why I did this was because I didn’t want anyone making fun of my hairy legs. Albeit there wasn’t much hair on my legs at 8 years old. I remember my mother scolded me for even taking my father’s red can Old Spice shave cream, the one with the boat on it. And I have been doing it since. In the winter time when I know I won’t have my legs out, I’ll let it go a little longer. But if there is a chance someone will see or even feel my legs, I have got to shave!2.Ryan-The first thing that comes to mind is tattoos, you tell a lot about someone by them. I live in a military town and I am still in the reserves so I see a lot of military themed tattoos. Whether it is paratroopers falling from the sky, a belt of ammo around their arm, or the commemorative boots and rifle to remember a fallen comrade. On the other hand I also used to work in a prison and saw a lot of gang/prison tattoos which essentially told a story of where they have been and what they have done. I recognize them now when I see them on the street. I do not have any tattoos or piercings so the closest thing I can think of is dying my hair in middle school. This was back when everyone had blond tips. I guess I did it because it was the thing to do. I only did it the one time and when I see those pictures all I can do is shake my head.
