ETHNOGRAPHIC PAPER
This project will consist of a research paper derived from original ethnographic fieldwork. The fieldwork for this project should include 10 to 12 hours of field work such as participant-observation and interviews. You were required to submit detailed field notes in Week 2 of the course. The Ethnographic Paper is cumulative, meaning that the assignments throughout the course have built towards it.
You will conduct field research on a small, but specific, aspect of culture or society. You may choose to research a specific ethnic group, religious group, occupational, group, or interest group. You can also choose to research a social issue or current event. Alternatively, you might choose a specific geographic focus or location for your ethnography. CHOSEN TOPIC:
Women, identity, and political activism
Avoid research involving minors, vulnerable groups, or groups involved in any illegal activity.
Field research methods may include web-based research, participant-observation, interviews, surveys, and other qualitative methods. Weekly assignments will guide you in developing your ethnographic research methods as well as analyzing and interpreting the ethnographic data.
The Ethnographic Paper must include the following items:
Introduction, thesis statement, and conclusion
Literature review
oBackground information on the topic of the project
oResearch question, stating the focus of the research
oTheoretical standpoint: how the research focus relates to anthropological theory
Methodology
oEthical considerations for the project
oInformation on the selected group and subculture
oDescription of key informants (interlocutors)
oSetting (i.e., dates and location(s) of research)
oResearch methods
Data analysis
oSummary/examples of data and their analysis
oFindings of analysis
Interpretation
oInterpretation of data using anthropological or social theory
