Go to the County Health Rankings project homepage at http://www.countyhealthrankings.org/
1. Click on “Explore Health Rankings”, go to “Find County Rankings” and type in the County of San Diego2. From the top menu select “Rankings” scroll down and click on your county under Health Outcomes
Overall Rank. Submit your responses to questions 3 – 7 below next to each bullet and bold and
underline your answers 3. Under Health Outcomes, select the link that says Premature Death.
• Summarize in one or two sentences identify the time period covered, and what the indicator
means.
• Compare the Premature Death rate in your county with the Premature Death rate for
your state overall.
• Is your county worse or better off than most other counties within your state? Explain your
basis for this comparison. Substantiate your assessment by citing the relevant quantitative
data.
• Assess the quality of the data for this indicator for your county. Do you think it may be more or
less reliable than data for other counties in your state? How do you know?
• How important is this measure in the overall health rankings for your county? Do you think
that’s appropriate, or would you weight it differently? If so, why? 4. Under Health Outcomes, select at least one of the other indicators listed.

5. Under Health Factors, select at least one indicator from each of the four domains listed (Health
Behaviors, Clinical Care, Social & Economic Factors, and Physical Environment). • Summarize in one or two sentences identify the time period covered, and what the indicator
means.

state overall.
• Is your county worse or better off than most other counties within your state? Explain
your basis for this comparison. Substantiate your assessment by citing the relevant

think that’s appropriate, or would you weight it differently? If so, why? 6. Click on the Take Action to Improve Health link at the top of the home page. Then click on “Action
Center”, “What Works for Health” and “Who to Work With”. Many of these link out to external
websites with information on community organizing or developing and evaluating public health
interventions.
• skim the materials available and write a short paragraph, describing the resources
available on the web.
• In one or two sentences, explain to your audience how these web resources may be
useful in developing programs that could improve public health, at least with respect
to the indicators you have explored in response to questions 3, 4, or 5 of this exercise.
7. For any one of the health outcomes or health factors you have described, give one specific idea for an
action that a community leader, elected official, or health professional might do to improve the health
of your selected county.
