Thinking about the Five-Stage Model of the college choice process, describe your decision to enroll in the undergraduate institution where you attended.

          When enrolling in the undergraduate institution I attended, I followed the five stages of the college decision process (predisposition, initial search, application, admission, and enrollment). According to Toutkoushian & Paulsen (2016), in the first stage, typically associated with the years before high school, the student decides whether or not to pursue a postsecondary education. I began by investigating online and examining various college websites. After narrowing my selection, I applied to the schools I was interested in. I then decided to enlist at my top-choice institution after receiving admission. As a veteran, I could utilize the G.I. Bill to fund my college education.

How did your decision process compare or contrast to the model described in Toukoushian and Paulsen?

         Toukoushian and Paulsen’s model closely resembled my decision-making procedure. I researched various colleges, applied to the ones that intrigued me, and then enrolled at my top choice institution. Throughout the course, I did not encounter any significant obstacles. Before applying, I only visited some of the campuses. This is the most important distinction between my process and the one described in the book. I conducted my investigation online and by speaking with individuals who had previously attended the institutions of interest.

In what specific ways does your institution persuade prospective college students that theirs would be the best choice?

          My institution convinces prospective college students that it is the best option through various methods. They have a compelling marketing and recruitment team that does an excellent job of reaching out to high school students and raising their awareness of the institution. They also provide substantial financial aid and scholarships, a major selling factor for many students. Lastly, they have an excellent reputation and a reputation for having a superior education. According to Toutkoushian & Paulsen (2016), in the third stage, students conduct in-depth research on the costs, benefits, and course or program offerings of institutions in their initial choice set and apply to a subset of those institutions.

For a Christian family anticipating the college choice process, what biblical guidance would you provide regarding how to make the wisest decision? Include at least two in-text citations to support your points. 

         The Bible offers a wealth of advice on making prudent choices. The book of Proverbs states, Get wisdom, Get understanding (New King James Version, 1769/2008, Proverbs 4:5). Therefore, I would advise a Christian family to pursue God’s knowledge and experience before making a college decision. They should seek God’s wisdom regarding their school selection through prayer. They should also seek advice from other Christians who have navigated the college selection process. As people, we need to trust God’s word before deciding. Therefore, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths” (New King James Version, 1769/2008, Proverbs 5:5-6)
