The Five-Stage Model of the college choice process, as described by Toutkoushian and Paulsen, outlines the steps individuals typically go through when making a decision about which college to attend. These stages include predisposition, search, choice, and enrollment. After, reading this week’s lesson I thought about how my decision to enroll at Old Dominion University (ODU) aligned and differed from the Five-Stage Model described by Toutkoushian and Paulsen.

Our text mentioned that a person’s lifetime earnings should be equal the cost of maintaining a person’s human capitol plus the cost of their education (Toutkoushian & Paulsen, P.47, 2016). Comparing and contrasting my decision process highlights the importance of that factor which ultimately led me to making a choice based on my available options. The comparison suggested that I actually weighed various factors, including institutional characteristics, academic programs, financial considerations, and personal preferences.

In what specific ways does your institution persuade prospective college students

In terms of how Old Dominion University might persuade prospective students that theirs would be the best choice, Old Dominion employed various strategies to showcase their strengths. To include:

Academic Reputation 

Highlighting the quality and variety of academic programs, accreditation, faculty expertise, research opportunities, and success stories of alumni. ODU showcased rankings and accolades to demonstrate their standing among peer institutions.

Campus Culture and Resources

ODU emphasized campus facilities, student organizations, extracurricular activities, support services, and the overall campus environment. As an institution it offered  virtual or in-person campus tours, open houses, and student testimonials all common approaches to provide an immersive experience for prospective students.

For a Christian family anticipating the college choice process, what biblical guidance would you provide regarding how to make the wisest decision

For a Christian family in the college choice process, seeking biblical guidance can be valuable. Actually, the bible tells us to Seek Wisdom and Guidance: Proverbs 3:5-6 advises individuals to trust in the Lord and lean not on their understanding. It encourages seeking God’s guidance and acknowledging His wisdom in decision-making processes. Prayer, seeking counsel from trusted Christian mentors, and reflecting on one’s values and goals in light of Scripture can help make a wise choice.

Consider God’s Calling and Purpose: Ephesians 2:10 reminds believers that they are God’s workmanship, created for good works. Christian families may consider how their educational choices align with God’s calling and purpose for their lives. Reflecting on their talents, passions, and the impact they want to make in the world can guide their decision-making process.

Although, these suggestions are general and not specific to Old Dominion University. It’s important for individuals and families to prayerfully discern their unique circumstances and seek personalized guidance as they navigate the college choice process.
