After reading the assigned article and chapter(s) from the textbook, analyze the reflections of the father on his relationship with his children and draw some conclusions about the quality of that relationship and the effect it has had on the children’s development. Remember to join the discussion topic for this assignment. Your contribution to the discussion can earn 5 extra credit points. I share some of my own reflections on this article.
Your analysis will consist of 4 parts.
1. Provide a summary of the subject of the article (i.e., parent reflection, pandemic, parent-child relationships).
2. Describe the family depicted in the article, including family structure, current circumstances, age, and gender of children.
3. Select 3 of the following concepts and theories to analyze the parenting practices and parent-child relationships depicted in the article.
Piaget’s theory of cognitive development for adolescents and older. Formal Operations are also called abstract thought. (Heath, 232)
Differentiation from parents (H, 236)
Parent’s role in adolescent self-esteem (234-236)
Racial Socialization and Identity Formation (H, 50, 53, 236-237) Note: Identity Formation refers to all aspects of a person’s identity. Gender identity is one part of the process.
Your analysis is made by linking course content to the parent in the article. Links should be specific and identify and define concepts and theories (use the terms to label concepts and topics such as secure attachment, or Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development), with references (i.e., Heath, 149). Be careful of plagiarism.
With each concept linked to the article, you will analyze the parent-child relationship describing how that concept helps us understand an aspect of the relationship. Address the following in your analysis.
The effects of the current circumstances on the parent and their methods of parenting.
The possible effects of the parent’s methods on the child’s developmental outcome and the health of their relationship.
4. Summarize your findings and suggest the next steps for the parent.
