Weeks 3: Islam and the African World

Writing Assignment # 2

Use The 5Ws: Who, What, Where, When, and Why. 

Some Writers Add a Sixth Question, How, to the List.

Due Date: Sunday, June 18th.

Watch the Nyag Video: “A History of Islam in Africa.” Write a Reflection Paper based on the following:
Read Robinson, Chap 6: “Western Views of Islam and Africa,” pp. 74-78. Summarize the main points of the chapter. 
Read Van Sertima, p. 1- 9. Who were the Moors? What have you learned about their race and origin? 
Watch video: “When the Moors Ruled in Europe, PBS Documentary.” Then write a  Reflection Paper based on the following:
Read Robinson, Chapter 5: “Muslim Identity and the Slave Trade,” pp. 60-73. Summarize the main points of the chapter. 
Read Segal, Chap. 4: “Practice of Slavery,” p. 35-66. Then write a summary of the chapter. In other words, in one sentence per paragraph, try to capture 20 main points in the chapter on Islam and the practice of slavery. 
Read Segal, Chap. 12 on “Survivals of Slavery.” Then watch video– “Mauritania:  Slavery’s Last Stronghold, CNN Documentary.” Finally, write a Reflection Paper on the survival of slavery in Africa. Here are a few questions to stimulate thought:
How much did you know about this subject prior to this semester?
What were your feelings after viewing the lecture?
What have you learned about the spread of Islam in Africa?
What came as a surprise in this video?
What do you know now that you didn’t know before?
What questions in this lecture would you like answered?
What are the best parts of the lecture? What are the worst parts?
In your opinion, what is the most important line or lines in this video?
Have you changed any ideas you used to have on this subject?
