This week, you’re going to weigh in on one of the most difficult questions facing public health professionals today. Nearly every public health department now operates one or several social media accounts, such as the Jefferson County Department of Health’s Facebook page. While social media is a tool that can help access a number of people very quickly in times of crisis, like the COVID-19 pandemic, it can also act as a platform for disinformation. For this week’s assignment, identify one social media platform that you are most interested in (Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) and find a post about a topic that interests you from an OFFICIAL public health agency. Then, find a post from an UNOFFICIAL source around the same topic, such as a blog. Post links to both, and discuss the following: Which post got more engagement? (Likes, shares, retweets, etc…)What is the general consensus about the post in the comment section? Which post catches your eye more and why? Does the unofficial source contain any information that is dubious or difficult to confirm? Does the official source contain information that is complex or difficult to understand?
